Bootloader Unlock vs Lock: What It Means and When to Do It
What Is the Bootloader?
The bootloader is the first software that runs on power-on. It verifies and loads the OS — the doorman of the device.
Locked vs Unlocked
| Aspect | Locked | Unlocked |
|---|---|---|
| Custom ROM | Cannot install | Can install |
| Root access | Not possible | Possible |
| OTA updates | Normal | May fail |
| Security | Full | Reduced |
| Knox (Samsung) | Intact | Tripped permanently |
| Data | Preserved | Wiped on unlock |
When to Unlock
- Installing custom ROM at customer request
- Root access for specific repairs
- Development/testing
When NOT to Unlock
- FRP bypass — better methods exist
- Samsung — permanently trips Knox
- Warranty devices
- Without explicit written consent
The OEM Unlock Toggle
Most devices require enabling “OEM Unlocking” in Developer Options first. This is a safety measure against unauthorized unlocking.
